Deregulation is a process that is designed to help the consumer.  Until deregulation, the consumer did not have a choice of natural gas, or electricity service  providers.  This meant that the natural gas, and electricity service  providers could charge virtually any price they wanted.

The main goals of deregulation are to drive the prices of electricity, and natural gas down, and open up the marketplace to competition.

There are 18 states currently in some stage of deregulation. The states where electricity is deregulated are: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maryland, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Texas, and Washington, DC. The states were natural gas is deregulated are: California, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Even though consumers in many states have had a choice of REP’s for a couple of years, a vast majority of consumers have not exercised that choice.   By simply NOT exercising that choice, consumers most often end up paying considerably more for electric service. Most consumers site reliability as a main reason for not having switched.  However reliability of service delivery should not be a concern because the equipment; the power grids are seperate from the company which does the billing and customer service. These lines continue to be maintained by a Con Edison.  Once Con Ed reads the meter, that information is then transmitted to a REP for consumer billing. No matter who supplies you with electricity, or natural gas, it will ultimately travel through the same supply lines, and the same process of billing applies.

The result of this is that no one from your new REP has to come out to your home for any reason.  The same meter reader (ConEd) will come next month, just as last.  The ONLY differences are that the price should be lower,  you’ll have to write the check to the new REP.  Because the prices are regulated by the area government, price gouging will not occur.

The process for switching your service is quite SIMPLE AND FREE.  All the consumer needs to do is to contact a Retail Energy Provider (REP) you’d like to establish service with, like Ambit Energy.  More than likely, the price for electricityy and/or natural gas service will be lower than what you’re paying now, especially if you have not made a conscious choice of electric service providers.

At Ambit Energy Service, once you’ve made the decision to switch, a customer service representative will contact you by phone within just a few minutes.  They will verify that you indeed are switching to Ambit.  Once the verification process is complete, you will receive your first bill from Ambit Energy Service on your next normal billing cycle.

Please note that no matter who you choose to contract with for electricity, and/or natural gas services, the process is generally the same.
