The process in Texas for switching your electric service is quite SIMPLE AND FREE.  All the consumer needs to do is to contact a Retail Energy Provider (REP) you’d like to establish service with.  More than likely, the price for natural gas service will be lower than what you’re paying now, especially if you have not made a conscious choice of electric service providers.

Deregulation is a process that is designed to help the consumer.  Until deregulation, the consumer did not have a choice of electricity providers.  This meant that the electric energy  provider could charge virtually any price it wants.

Even though the consumer in Texas has had a choice of REP’s for a couple of years, approximately 70% of over 7 million consumers have not exercised that choice.   Most consumers site reliability as a main concern.  This is not an issue.  The equipment, and the power lines, are owned by a seperate. The lines continue to be maintained by Reliant Energy.  However, once Reliant Energy reads the meter, that information is then transmitted to a REP for consumer billing.
