There are lots of misconceptions about network marketing floating around out there.  One of them is that “only the guys at the top of the company make all the money”.  Well, that is not exactly true.  The income generated by a distributor versus the income generated by an officer/employee of the cmpany is totally different.

For purposes of this discussion, I will only focus on the income generated by the distributor.

Often when being approached by a new distributor who wants to present their business opportunity to you, that distributor will sometimes “embellish” the incomes being generated by some of those in the upline.  While most of the story is usually true, it can be misleading to the person the distributor is talking to.  The “prospect” will frequently wonder why aren’t you making “all that money”?  Well, it’s simple.  The distributor is just getting started most likely and simply has not been involved long enough to begin to generate significant enough income for it to show.  The distributor will usually tell the success story of someone in the upline in hopes to impress the prospect enough that they decide to join with the distributor in their program.

It is probably not the best idea to “embellish” anyone’s story.  The danger is that, it’s not true.  Secondly, it can give false hope and expectation to your prospect.  That’s where the problems begin.  We’ll talk about those problems at a later time.

Back to “those at the top making all the money”.  Really, it’s that those distributors who are making “all the money” have been around longer, have worked harder and been much more consistent in building their business.   Ask Brian McClure or Carlos Marin, or Mark Yarnell.  Longevity and consistent work are the only differences between them and a new person.  People who are new to network marketing will ”generally” agree to TRY it for a few months or so.  If they’ve not made millions in those 90 days, they become disillusioned and frequently will simply stop building.  In the industry, it’s called the “90 day wall”.  If a person can make it past the 90 day wall, they tend to stand a better chance of generating more income.  Those at the “top” have made a committment to achievement of their goals.  They will not allow anyone or anything stop them from achieving their goal(s).

Now for the recommended reading.  If you are new to network marketing, I would suggest picking up a copy of any of the following books:  The Wave 4 Way to Build Your Downline”, by Richard Poe; “The New Professionals, The Rise of Network Marketing As the Next Major Profession”, by Charles King; and “Your Best Year in Network Marketing”, by Mark Yarnell.  Any of these books will give the new person a wealth of information for developing a mature approach to building a network marketing organization.
